Industrial achievement

Adulthood, in the developmental journey of an individual, signifies a complex phase. This is the stage where one is expected to bear all kinds of responsibilities. It is a psychological phase where one must confront and assimilate the successes and failures of life, with remnants of childhood and youth influencing this state. Many confusions and the experience of facing attractions are helpful at this stage. Establishing this achievement is a stepping stone in civic life. Due to natural differences between individuals, these steps are not equally helpful for everyone. There is also variation in the way one accepts or rejects triumphs and defeats. Nevertheless, the impulses and emotions experienced during this phase are generally uniform across individuals. Dozens of emotions like weariness, disgust, detachment, arrogance, etc., are found in various forms. Anxiety, contentment, anger, and envy are expressed appropriately at this stage. Its impact is not limited to the individual and family but also extends to the culture, institutions, and community of the outside world. Sri Murugesh R. Nirani, as an industrialist, political leader, and development thinker, has made several achievements as listed below.

Murugesh R. Nirani, a B.E. graduate, did not look for employment. He leaned towards creating self-employment. He started Nirani Automobiles. He also started the M.R.N. branded tractor trailer manufacturing industry. Along with the tractor trailer manufacturing, he also has an automobile shop.H.M.T. Tractor sub-dealership and Automobiles dealership were started, and he thought about providing employment opportunities to all educated members of his family and other classes, and uplifting everyone along with him. For this, he received great support, cooperation, and encouragement from his family. Due to all these reasons, Murugesh became a small entrepreneur in a very short period. However, the plan for a large sugar factory caused anxiety to all family members.

One day, by 7 PM, it was announced that they would be returning home from Hanchinala, their birthplace, after 4-5 visits. Due to the significant plan they had undertaken, the family members were unaware of the concerns of everyone at home. 18-20 people from the village, including elders of the family, relatives, and close ones, were astonished to see them in the verandah. Outside the verandah, all the elder and younger brothers, and inside, behind all the room doors, the mother, elder aunts, and younger aunts were eagerly listening to the discussion.

To build this sugar factory, Shankar Gidasannavar, Kakandaki Sangappa, Khaji Shivanand Ninganur came together and convinced their uncle Mahadevappa, arranged finances, and started a small factory. With the result of this small enterprise, a Khandasari unit with a capacity of crushing 500 tons of sugarcane was established with great effort in 1996-97. The project started on about 50 acres of their own land adjacent to Mudhol city and produced for one year, but did not see significant profits. In large factories with a capacity of 2500 tons, sugar was produced at a prestigious 11.5 to 12 percent, but their Khandasari technology at that time was only 9 to 9.5 percent. Realizing this, Murugesh implemented a vacuum pan system experimentally during the second year of production, even before the production was complete. Thus, they earned the distinction of establishing the smallest sugar producing factory in India. For their achievement, the then central government honored them with the Udyog Ratna award. The achievement of this enterprise for 10 to 12 years was immense and unparalleled. The Khandasari unit, which started in 1997 with a capacity of only 300 T.D.P, has today increased its crushing capacity to 24,000 tons per day, and also has a 1,20,000 liter distillery unit with 67 megawatts of power generation. Through this, they provided employment to about 1,600 educated unemployed individuals. It also played a major role in the overall development of the region, becoming the lifeline for 30,000 sugarcane farming families. In the initial days of this factory, Murugesh himself would be engrossed in work without sleep for 3-4 hours a day. In the newspaper of those days, “Night articles like ‘Watchman in the morning, Chairman’ used to appear. Murugesh worked hard for the factory’s progress, serving as a watchman in the morning, a chairman, and a clerk in the afternoon.”

The art of converting life’s challenges into opportunities with wisdom has been well mastered by industrialist and former minister Murugesh Nirani. He has risen by making the problems he faced into stepping stones. Hear this exciting story from him. “I got very few marks in the B.E. Engineering exam. Instead of going for a job, I started farming. We have land on the banks of the Krishna River. I used to swim in the river holding the tail of an ox. I worked hard and grew good sugarcane on 200 acres of land. Those were very happy days. But no factory agreed to buy this sugarcane. The officer of the sugar factory tore up the letter from the minister who recommended buying my sugarcane and threw it in the dustbin. My blood boiled. I silently endured it and came out and decided that I myself should build a factory. I used the technology I knew and built a mini sugar factory in Mudhol. This benefited me and some farmers. The mini factory has now grown into a large national-level factory.” This is how he narrates the turning point story of his life. Nirani bought 8 factories that were closed due to administrative failure and financial crunch and they are carrying out the rejuvenation and maintaining it well. This is truly a rare achievement and a model.

If a factory closes, thousands of working families face hardship. The vibrancy of life in the surrounding area is lost. Darkness pervades even during the day. Reviving closed factories and getting their wheels turning again is a very difficult task. Murugesh Nirani has been working for the past decade to revive closed factories.

The Kedarnath and Badami Sugar Factories near Kerekalmatti village in Bagalkot district had shut down due to administrative failure and financial crisis. The machinery had begun to rust.

The workers of these factories and the sugarcane growing farmers met Murugesh Nirani and requested his help to restart the factories. Nirani purchased Kedarnath and Badami Sugar Factories, engaged expert engineers and skilled workers, and restarted them in just six months. These factories are now running well. Laughter has returned to the factory premises. It has also benefited the farmers.

“Be an entrepreneur, provide employment” is the slogan given by Nirani when he was the Industries Minister to the youth. He has helped hundreds of youth to grow as entrepreneurs. Recognizing Nirani’s public service, K.L.E. Technology University in Hubballi recently honored him with an honorary doctorate, which is highly appropriate.

Murugesh R. Nirani, the Minister of Large and Medium Industries, always has a farsighted vision. Not only that, but he also plays a decisive role in their successful implementation, and this was a much-talked-about idea at the time. This program, which he initiated when he was the Minister of Mines and Geology, brought immense joy to jewelry lovers. Indeed, our state holds the distinction of being the only state in the country that produces gold. The BJP government is now preparing to create a new history to further this distinction. For this, Nirani is planning the Department of Mines and Geology through innovative schemes. They had come forward to take it to the common people. Through this, they ushered in another popular program.

For the first time in the country, preparations were underway to establish government-owned jewelry stores (jewelry shops) in the state. The special feature is that all these stores will be managed by the government itself. Additionally, jewelry will be manufactured according to customer demand.

A significant decision was taken by the department to open government jewelry stores, similar to Mysore Silk, Mysore Sandal Soap, and Cauvery Handlooms. Thoughts were given to opening these stores in collaboration with the Department of Mines and Geology and public participation. The objective of this project is to start operations of these stores initially in major cities of the state (Tier 1) including Bengaluru and Mysuru. If there is a good response from customers in the state, the department had also decided to launch gold coins with the emblem of Ganda Bherunda, the proud symbol of Karnataka, in the future, making them suitable for gifting during weddings and other events in these jewelry stores even in other states.

There is a high demand for gold coins from customers. The association of jewelers had requested in a meeting that this be considered positively. Nirani, who had agreed to this, announced that gold coins would be released in jewelry stores soon.

Be an entrepreneur, provide employment, that is the path to success:-

Instead of searching for jobs after completing education, young people should establish their own enterprises and provide employment to others. To this end, the Department of Industries has organized the ‘Become an Entrepreneur, Provide Employment’ program to provide all necessary information. Additionally, the Department of Industries is conducting industrial adalat (court) sessions to resolve industrial issues. Due to such programs, the state has become known as the No. 1 industrial-friendly state in the country. The program has been successfully conducted in Bengaluru, Kalaburagi, Mysuru, Belagavi, and Mangaluru, and will now be held in Tumakuru. Another major proof of the success of this program is that the neighboring Tamil Nadu government is now looking to emulate the ‘Become an Entrepreneur, Provide Employment’ scheme.

MRN Groups’ document:-

The fame of Murugesh Rudrappa Nirani Group of Industries has today attracted the attention of countries both within and outside India. Murugesh Nirani’s sugar factory, which started with a capacity of crushing only 500 tons of sugarcane per day, now owns 10 sugar factories with a capacity of crushing 1 lakh tons of sugarcane daily. It is a matter of pride that the giant force behind this journey, which started in 1995 and grew to this level in just 26 years, is Murugesh Rudrappa Nirani, who served as the Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries in the state.

MRN Groups set a record last year by crushing the most sugarcane in the country. Additionally, they set another record by crushing 60,975.983 metric tons of sugarcane in a single day. Each factory of the Group is one of the most efficient, successful, and reliable sugar production units in the country, having crushed the most sugarcane last year. Furthermore, today, 80,000 people have built their lives in this Group. After successfully building such a large-scale group of industries, Murugesh Nirani has dedicated himself to social service through politics. Today, his son Vijay Nirani is successfully leading the entire responsibility of MRN Groups. Approximately 1.4 lakh farmer families in North Karnataka, Mandya, and Mysore regions are directly dependent on this Group today.

Vijay Nirani, the young Managing Director of MRN Groups, is truly a son worthy of his father. Following in his father’s footsteps, he is achieving success and, like his father, is gentle by nature and soft-spoken. Vijay Nirani, who attributes all this success to our farmers and laborers, stating that without their cooperation and hard work, achieving these goals would not have been possible, primarily acknowledging the efforts of farmers and employees as the reason for this success, stands today in the league of international entrepreneurs.
